After grass, maize is the most important crop in Dutch dairy farming. Optimal cultivation and utilization of this crop are therefore important for the efficiency of the sector. This handbook provides an actual and complete overview of the latest information.
The handbook gives information about the crop physiology, cultivation of the soil, fertilization, choice of varieties, aspects for sowing, weed control, pest and diseases, the harvest, transport, storage, nutritional value of maize. Concerning crop protection it contains relevant descriptions of the problems and the options to prevent or control ( both alternatives as well as chemical measures).
The maize handbook was commissioned by the Dairy Board made by Wageningen UR Livestock Research and Applied Plant Research (Wageningen UR)
In the handbook the most recent developments and research results are processed by experts of Applied Plant Research and Livestock Research Wageningen UR. The contents of the handbook are adjusted annually. It provides objective information for the dairy industry regarding the use and cultivation of maize in an orderly manner.
